Calcium Propionate

 

Calcium propionate is a newer food mould inhibitor, it is the calcium salt of acidic mould inhibitor propionic acid, it is white crystal or powder in appearance, odourless or with special propionic acid odour, it is stable to light and heat, hygroscopic, easily soluble in water, the aqueous solution is weakly alkaline, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, insoluble in benzene and acetone. Calcium propionate is the normal intermediate product of animal body metabolism, it is safer for animals to feed on. It has a wide range of antimicrobial effect on mould, enzyme bacteria and bacteria, inhibits microbial reproduction, prevents mouldy feed, and can be used as antimicrobial agent for food and feed, and preservative for bread and pastries. As a feed additive, it can effectively inhibit the mould of feed and prolong the preservation period of feed, and it can also improve the appetite of livestock and milk production of cows if it is combined with other inorganic salts. Calcium propionate can be used as preservative in bread, pastry, cheese and other solid foods, anti-mould agent and mineral additive in feed industry.
